Dialup Setup: Setting Up Windows 95

These instructions will take you through the complete setup of Dial-Up Networking and other network components required to dial-up using Windows 95; from the installation procedures to login process.
1. Install Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95
2. Enable the TCP/IP Networking Protocol
3. Configure the Modem and TCP/IP in Dial-Up Networking
4. You're Set! Make the Connection!

Install Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95
  1. If you don't have a folder in My Computer called Dial-Up Networking, follow these easy steps to install it.

  2. Open My Computer, Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs.
    3.
  3. Go to the Windows Setup tab, then highlight Communications and choose Details to see a list of components.
    4.
  4. Check the box next to Dial-Up Networking and choose OK, then choose Apply to begin installation.

  5. Once installation is complete (it will take a while) restart Windows when you're prompted to put your changes into effect.

Enable the TCP/IP Networking Protocol
  1. Open My Computer, Control Panel, then Network to display the installed network Components.

  2. Remove all unnecessary components; you only need the Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP protocol.

  3. In the Configuration tab choose Add. Highlight Protocol and choose Add. Highlight Microsoft and TCP/IP then choose OK.

  4. You're back in the main Network window. If Dial-Up Adapter isn't installed, let's add it now.
    5.
  5. Choose Add again. Highlight Adapter and choose Add. Highlight Microsoft and Dial-Up Adapter, then choose OK.

  6. Choose OK once more and restart Windows again when prompted to put your changes into effect.

Configure the Modem and TCP/IP in Dial-Up Networking
  1. Open My Computer, Dial-Up Networking, then Make New Connection.
    2.
  2. Name the connection, select your modem (or install it if it's not installed yet), then choose Configure.
    3.
  3. Select your modem's COM port. For maximum speed, enter 38400 for 14.4 modems, and 57600 for 28.8.
  4. Go to the Connection tab. Make sure Data Bits is 8, Parity is None, Stop Bits is 1.
  5. Check "Wait For Dial Tone Before Dialing" and set "Cancel The Call If Not Connected Within __ Secs" to 90.

  6. Select Advanced. Set the Flow Control to Hardware. Choose OK, choose OK again, then choose Next.
  7. Enter the access phone number for your area. Choose Next, then Finish.

  8. Highlight the connection icon that you created and choose File, Properties. Uncheck the "Use Country Code and Area Code" option.

  9. Choose Server Type. The type of dial-up server is "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet".

  10. Then uncheck everything here except "Enable Software Compression" and the "TCP/IP" network protocol.
  11. Select TCP/IP Settings. Mark "Server Assigned IP Address" and "Specify Name Server Addresses".

  12. Enter your primary and secondary DNS server addresses. You will find these numbers in the documentation from your ISP..

  13. At the bottom, check "Use IP Header Compression" and "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network".
  14. Choose OK, then OK again, then OK once more.

Make the Connection!
  1. Go to My Computer, Dial-Up Networking, and open (double-click) the connection icon that you created.

  2. Enter your username and password in lowercase in the appropriate fields, then select connect to dial the modem.
    3.
  3. That's it! It'll verify your username and password, log you onto the network, then you're connected!
